Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
13 Mar 2026A Silent but Serious Condition
What Is DVT?
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein — most commonly in the legs. These clots can partially or completely obstruct blood flow. While some cases produce minimal symptoms, DVT can become life-threatening if the clot dislodges and travels to the lungs, causing a condition known as pulmonary embolism. Awareness and early detection are critical.
What Are the Warning Signs?
Common symptoms of DVT include:
- Sudden swelling of one leg — often without an obvious cause
- Pain or tenderness in the leg, particularly in the calf
- Warmth over the affected area
- Redness or visible skin discolouration
It is important to note that some patients may have very mild symptoms — or none at all. This is precisely why awareness and prompt evaluation are so essential whenever risk factors are present.
Who Is at Risk?
Several factors increase the likelihood of developing DVT, including:
- Prolonged travel, particularly long-haul flights
- Recent surgery or hospitalisation
- Pregnancy
- Cancer or cancer treatment
- Obesity or smoking
- Extended periods of immobilisation or bed rest
- A personal or family history of clotting disorders
Why Early Diagnosis Matters
DVT is diagnosed using a venous Doppler ultrasound — a non-invasive, reliable test that can quickly confirm the presence and extent of a clot. Prompt treatment with anticoagulants (blood thinners) can prevent clot progression, reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism, and lower the likelihood of long-term complications such as post-thrombotic syndrome.
When to Seek Medical Help
If you notice sudden leg swelling or pain — especially following travel, surgery, or a prolonged period of rest — do not wait. Seek medical evaluation immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can be lifesaving.
