Influenza (Flu) Vaccine for Children

13 Mar 2026

Why It Matters in Bangalore & India

Is It Really Just A Cold?

Influenza is often mistaken for a routine cold — but it is a distinct viral respiratory infection capable of causing high fever, severe body aches, cough, fatigue, and serious complications in children. In urban cities like Bangalore, seasonal flu cases rise significantly during monsoon and cooler months. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect children from severe influenza illness.

What Is Influenza?

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It spreads through:

  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Close contact in schools, daycare centres, and homes
  • Contaminated hands and surfaces

Children are particularly vulnerable due to close interaction in classrooms and play areas, where the virus spreads rapidly.

Why Is Flu a Concern in India?

In India, influenza circulates throughout the year, with notable peaks during the monsoon season, post-monsoon months, and winter in some regions. Bangalore's moderate climate and frequent seasonal transitions create conditions that favour the spread of viral respiratory infections.

Many parents assume the flu is simply a viral fever. However, influenza can sometimes lead to:

  • Severe dehydration
  • Pneumonia
  • Worsening of asthma and allergic conditions
  • Hospital admission in high-risk children

Young children, especially those below 5 years of age, are at greater risk of complications.

Why Is the Influenza Vaccine Recommended Annually?

The influenza virus mutates each year, which means the vaccine composition is updated annually to match circulating strains, protection from previous vaccination reduces over time, and yearly vaccination ensures the best available protection. This is precisely why the influenza vaccine is a once-a-year recommendation — not a one-time event.

Who Should Receive the Flu Vaccine?

The influenza vaccine is recommended for:

  • All children above 6 months of age
  • School-going children with high peer exposure
  • Children with asthma, allergies, or chronic medical conditions
  • Children living with elderly grandparents or immunocompromised family members

Annual flu vaccination is advisable for most children in urban India, given high exposure rates in schools and shared spaces.

When Is the Best Time to Vaccinate?

Ideally, the vaccine should be administered before the expected flu season — typically before the monsoon or at the start of seasonal transitions. However, it can be given at any time of year if the earlier window was missed.

Is the Flu Vaccine Safe?

Yes. The influenza vaccine has been used globally for decades with a well-established safety record. Common, short-lived side effects may include mild fever, soreness at the injection site, and mild fatigue for one to two days. These reactions are brief and far less severe than actual influenza infection. Importantly, the vaccine cannot cause flu illness.

Does the Vaccine Completely Prevent Illness?

No vaccine offers 100% protection. However, even if a vaccinated child contracts influenza, the illness is typically milder, the risk of hospitalisation is significantly reduced, and recovery is faster. The primary goal is prevention of severe disease.

Influenza vaccination is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended — especially for school-going children in cities like Bangalore. A simple annual vaccine can significantly reduce illness severity, school absenteeism, and family-wide infection spread.
